The viche of national-patriotic forces of Ukraine has adopted a resolution on creating a united democratic coalition.
Batkivshchyna, People’s Movement of Ukraine (Rukh), Motherland Defenders Party, People’s Self-Defense, Christian Democratic Union, Reforms and Order Party, Ukrainian Social Democratic Party, and other political and public organizations have joined the opposition.
"We’re calling on all political and public forces to join the opposition battle for Ukraine, its independence and European course. We’re appealing to the Ukrainian people to stand up to all possible action that will infringe on Ukraine’s statehood, constitutional order, democracy and values," says the resolution.
The united democratic coalition sets such goals as defending Ukraine’s European course of development, defending democracy, fighting for the creation of a socially-oriented economy, countering the domination of the oligarchs in the economy, strengthening Ukraine’s independence and protecting its territorial integrity, preventing Ukraine’s entry into any international organizations that conflict with Ukraine’s European aspirations, strengthening energy security and maintaining state ownership of the gas transport system, as well as protecting the status of Ukrainian as the only state language.
BYuT leader Yulia Tymoshenko has been chosen as the leader of the united democratic opposition.
"The People’s Movement of Ukraine (Rukh) supports this action and these events. But a united democratic opposition must have its leader. Our leader is Yulia Tymoshenko," Rukh leader Borys Tarasyuk said today during the viche of Ukrainian patriotic forces that took place today by the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv.
Yuriy Lutsenko, the leader of the People’s Self-Defense movement also supports this initiative. "There is a simple answer for those who want to defeat the latest anti-Ukrainian ‘Yanu-Kuchma’ – unite into a fist and be strong. We are stronger today because we know who betrayed us, and they’re not with us here any more. The opposition – this is your finest hour, Yulia Tymoshenko. This is when the true fighters will remain by you, when conviction is not measured in monetary terms," Yuriy Lutsenko said.
The deputy head of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party Olena Shustik believes that an opposition union of all democratic forces must stand up to the threat of loss of Ukraine’s main achievements.
"The inability of the democrats to unite under the threat of an anti-Ukrainian comeback resulted in the victory of complete lawlessness. Yanukovych came to power not only through total falsification and intimidation of the population, but due to a lack of unity along the democratic ranks. Some politicians we know put their own ambition and material gain above the national interests. Because of betrayal and corruption, the democratic coalition in parliament was destroyed and the government was dismissed. I hope this return by Yanukovych finally awakens all the healthy democratic forces of our country and we create the strongest opposition," Olena Shustik said.
