Yanukovych said that amendments to the presidential election law passed by parliament and signed by the current president on Thursday, February 4, would play a key role. "This will be a reliable guarantee, which will be put into practice only if [presidential candidate and Prime Minister Yulia] Tymoshenko tries to disrupt the work of election commissions at certain polling stations, and which won't work if the election process goes smoothly, in line with the current law," he said.
Yanukovych said that the amendments would work if there were a real threat to the stable work of election commissions. Yanukovych said that the amendments to the presidential election law had been passed, because "early this week, there were reports that Tymoshenko and her election headquarters are plotting a scenario to disrupt the election."
He also said that he was interested in doing everything to prevent irregularities in the election, along with international observers and an OSCE mission.
