In its recent press release, the European Commission expressed hope that the run-off presidential election in Ukraine would be not worse than the first round concerning observance of international standards, an UKRINFORM correspondent reported from Brussels.

The EC welcomed the positive course of the first voting on January 17, 2010, and took into consideration the assessments made by the mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Particularly, the European Commission pointed out the fact that the voting day was preceded by an active campaign, which offered to the electorate a good choice, as well as the fact that the voting itself proceeded in a peace atmosphere and with a rather high turnout.

The EC also voiced hope that the Ukrainian leaders would guarantee the same peace nature of the February 7 voting with regard for the positive aspects of the first round, the press release reads.

At the same time, the European Commission urged Ukrainian authorities to follow recommendations of the OSCE monitors concerning organization of voting procedure.

The European Union will continue support to Ukraine and its democratic development, hoping for further deepening of relations between the EU and Ukraine, the European Commission says.
