Speaker predicts "real war" during presidential election

Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn, who is running for the future presidency, predicts that "real war" will start after the first round of the coming presidential election, National radio reported.

He made a statement to this effect speaking in a 1+1 TV channel interview. "One of the patterns for full disorganization of Verkhovna Rada's work is being carried out," Lytvyn says.

He expressed confidence that this is being done "to pave the ground for introducing a state of emergency and preventing further development of the electoral process under unfavorable conditions."

In his response to the remark that he may also have a stake in a failure of the run-off election - to become an acting president and govern the country, Lytvyn said this variant is impossible. He reminded that the incumbent head of state will give up his powers on the day a president-elect swears into office. The voting day is January 17, 2010.
