"We back the leading role of the
Council of Europe as a unique pan-European political forum that should
maintain a leading role in the system of European institutes in the
area of democracy, human rights and rule of law. The Council of Europe
should remain the only source of lawmaking and Europe's main expert for
human rights standards," Yushchenko noted.
President underlined that Ukraine's participation in the Council of Europe, including the activity of the Verkhovna Rada Permanent Delegation, is an important direction of the country's foreign policy.
