Ex-speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Communist Party MP Oleksandr Tkachenko, broke a microphone of the camera crew of the STB TV Channel, Ukrainian radio reported.

A journalist working for the channel, Olha Chervakova, asked Tkachenko to comment on his proposal to cut the number of journalists accredited in parliament. The MP said that journalists should cover rural life instead of spending time in a lunchroom of the Ukrainian parliament.

The MP refused to make any comments, snatching out the journalist's microphone and throwing it downstairs.

The chairwoman of the parliamentary committee for the freedom of speech, Anna Herman, said that the committee would consider the incident at its next meeting. "We'll defend journalists and support their right to fulfill their professional tasks in all agencies, including law enforcement agencies," she said.
