Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has sent a letter to Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in which he expressed serious concern over the critical situation with the financing of the Ukrainian army that puts obstacles to the ability of the armed forces to fulfill their task on the country's defense, the presidential press service told UKRINFORM.

"UAH 7.4 billion worth of military expenditure determined in 2009 in the general fund of the state budget of Ukraine and an unrealistic, regarding its replenishment, special fund (UAH 4.2 billion) resulted in the loss of positive trends in the development of the Ukrainian army launched in previous years. Due to the lack of funds, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have several times reduced the strength of the operational and combat training of servicemen and refused to hold multi-service exercises at shooting ranges," Yushchenko said.

The head of state said that nearly UAH 1.25 billion was currently required for the army to pay wages to servicemen, maintain personnel, provide military men with fuel, and make payments for municipal services.
