On Monday eight miners were killed at a coal mine named after Kirov at the town of Makiyivka, Interfax-Ukraine learned this at the department of the State committee for industrial safety and labor protection (Derzhpromnahliad) in Donetsk region.

A methane discharge occurred at a depth of 110 meters at Kirov mine run by Makiyivvuhillia at 1720 on Sunday, August 23. A total 141 people were at the mine at that moment, the state committee said.

Eight people were killed, four injured as a result of the accident.

A commission lead by Coal Industry Minister Viktor Poltavets has been formed to find out the causes of the accident.

The government extended condolences to the families and friends of the pitmen.

The commission will be working at the site until all the circumstances of the accident become clear.
