Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has demanded that the Prosecutor General's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) take urgent measures to protect Ukraine's national interests in the gas sector, according to Bohdan Sokolovsky, the Ukrainian president's commissioner for international energy security, the presidential press service reported on Thursday.

He said that the president was concerned that the government was not holding talks to attract loans from international financial institutions required to make payments for Russian gas in 2009.

The Presidential Secretariat criticized the government and Ukraine's state gas firm Naftogaz of holding a "secret dialogue" with non-transparent and offshore companies on multibillion loans that the next generations of Ukrainians will have to repay, UkrInform reported.
