The Spas, a Cossack boat that was planning to sail to the Atlantic Ocean sank in the Dnieper River in Kherson in the early hours of August 13, the emergencies department of Kherson Regional State Administration has reported, according to UkrInform.

It is currently unclear why the boat sank. A diesel fuel spill with a width of 30 meters and a length of 40 meters was spotted at the site where the boat was floating.

Divers are expected to arrive at the scene to investigate the circumstances of the accident. Work on retrieving the boat from the water is scheduled for August 14.

The Spas, a Cossack boat built according to the designs of the 16th-17th centuries, was set afloat in 2005. The vessel, which is 20 meters in length, 3.8 meters in width and 1.2 meters in depth, was built from larch and oak.
