"I believe that this landmark visit will unite the Ukrainian people, [and] unite Orthodox believers. I think that new and good times are coming," he told reporters on Tuesday in Kyiv Pechersk Monastery, where Patriarch Kirill conducted a liturgy.
Yanukovych also said that he hasn't yet managed to personally talk to the Russian Orthodox Church head. "I think this will happen at today's reception," he said.
The Party of Regions leader refused to comment on the protest rallies held by opponents of the patriarch's visit to Ukraine.
