The transit of Russian gas to European countries is a major national priority for Ukraine, President Viktor Yuschenko said. He made the comment at a Ukrainian-Austrian business forum in Kyiv on Tuesday, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

Yuschenko denied all of the accusations made against Ukraine that the country could block gas supplies to Europe.

"Ukraine is yet to produce a politician who could close the taps of gas supplies to Europe," he said.

"We would [instead] close the [gas] taps for a dozen national consumers in order to show that our cooperation with the EU … on the transit of Russian gas is one of our national priorities," Yuschenko added.

He also expressed regret that the European Commission and EU countries do not currently have a shared strategy for the functioning of the gas market.
