Justice Minister Mykola
Onishchuk is convinced that January 17, 2010, is the only constitutional date
for holding the presidential elections, he said it on air at the First Public
TV channel.
The Justice Minister
supported a call from VR Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn to speed up consideration of
the issue about the data of the presidential elections. "Since it is
difficult to call the political situation in Ukraine as stable, the sooner the
Parliament takes a decision about determining the election date, it will have a
more positive influence on the political process".
On April 1, the Verkhovna
Rada appointed the presidential elections for October 25, 2009. 401 people's
deputies voted for the relevant resolution. In his turn, Viktor Yushchenko
approached the Constitutional
Court regarding constitutionality of this
decision. On May 12, the Constitutional
Court recognized the VR resolution about
appointing the current presidential elections for October 25 as
unconstitutional.
