The situation on the ships seized by Somali pirates that have Ukrainian sailors onboard remains unchanged, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

Ministry spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych said at a briefing on Monday that according to the companies operating the ships, the crewmen are well.

"There is a sufficient amount of fuel, food and drinking water on board the ships," he said.

He said that talks are currently being held with the pirates on the speedier release of the ships and that contact is being kept with the operating companies to get quick reports on the further development of the situation.

"The owners [of the ships] are in constant contact with the families of the hijacked sailors," Kyrylych said.

He said that 24 Ukrainians are on board the Ariana and eight Ukrainians are on board the Marathon.

Moreover, the pirates are currently holding hostage the Hansa Stavanger, with two Ukrainians onboard, and the Patriot, with one Ukrainian sailor onboard.
