The question of unity of political forces in Ukraine is this country's homework, President Viktor Yushchenko told the press in Brussels Thursday, commenting to the press on his meeting with Benita Ferrero Waldner, EU commissioner for external relations and European neighborhood policy.

In the President's conviction, joint work to overcome the financial and economic crisis may unite all political forces and consolidate authority in Ukraine.

Viktor Yushchenko emphasized that Ukraine can solve the crisis, with its peak in 2009. But the country needs assistance of international finance organizations to back the domestic effort. In this connection, the President reminded of the importance of further cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, which would prove that influential international institutions believe in success of Ukraine's anti-crisis program.

In the meantime, the President says, the Ukrainian government is dragging feet on restoration of dialogue with the IMF during the past two months.

Asked by an UKRINFORM correspondent in Brussels about the national anti-crisis program, Yushchenko noted that its implementation takes revision of the national budget.

Particularly, he says, about UAH 50 billion of the 2009 budget's outlay side is unrealistic (UAH 7.70 / USD 1).

“We reached agreement with the IMF that 30 billion of the sum will be covered at the cost of the budget deficit, but the rest of UAH 20 billion is the government's responsibility. Ways must be found either to optimize budget spending, or to specify its revenue side for the compensation of that money,” the head of state said.
