The Cabinet of Ministers has today passed a resolution to cancel operation of a 13% import duty markup, except for automobiles and refrigerators, said Oksana Prodan, Head of the Cabinet of Ministers' Businessmen Council.

She stressed that according to the law, which set these markup, the government is authorized to make a decision on its abolishment for some goods.

For his part, Economics Minister Bohdan Danylyshyn noted that this resolution would take effect 10 days after publication.

He also added that the Cabinet had approved of a draft law by which, in case of its adoption in the parliament, the operation of a 13% import duty markup would be cancelled at all.

Prime Minister Tymoshenko had earlier said that given Ukraine does not refuse from the extra import markup, the same steps would be made against Ukraine on behalf of other WTO member-states with the Ukrainian imports getting new customs duties.

As reported, on February 20, President Viktor Yushchenko signed a law on making amendments to some laws of Ukraine in order to improve the balance of payments of Ukraine in view of the global financial downturn. The instrument envisages a 13% temporary surcharge on the existing rates of import duties for a period of six months.

On March 6, the law on a 13-percent import duty took force in Ukraine.
