The financial and economic downturn will not influence the development of relations between Ukraine and the European Commission, as well as the progress of negotiations between Ukraine and the EC on creating a free trade zone, says Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine.

“The financial turmoil is not a reason for halting the negotiation process,” he noted, UKRINFORM reported.

At the same time he believes that “such measure as introducing a 13% import duty markup is not normal for the two partners that are in talks on creating a free trade zone”.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had earlier praised the pace of talks between Ukraine and the EU on creating a free trade zone. She also stands for cancellation of the law on a 13% temporary target markup on the rates of import duty that took effect on March 6.
