The European Union hopes that the gas argument between Ukraine and Russia will be solved in the near future and also expressed concern of the fact that the similar difficulties in the bilateral gas relations between the two countries are aggravating for the third time during the peak demand for gas in the EU countries, spokesman of the European Commission Ferran Tarradellas Espuny told a briefing in Brussels on December 10, UKRINFORM reports.

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs is concerned about the situation. This is the third time when the similar difficulties appear in winter time when the demand for gas goes up. Certainly, Ukraine is a transit country. The Commission told both Gazprom and representatives of the Ukrainian authorities whom we met the same day that the European Commission does not desire to see any influence of this situation on supplies of gas which goes by transit through the Ukrainian territory to the EU,” the spokesman of the European Commission underscored.

Ferran Tarradellas Espuny reminded that the EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs has already urged Ukraine and Russia to find the long-term solution of the problem which repeats every time. Such a decision should be reached as fast as possible. The EU intends to welcome the decision on January 9 when the regular meeting of the EU group on gas supplies will take place, the spokesman said. He also noted that the group is supposed to estimate the development of the situation, he noted. Ferran Tarradellas Espuny said that on December 9, Gazprom's representative Sergey Kupriyanov met experts with the Directorate General of the European Commission for Trade.
