On December 10 in Ukraine and the world celebrates the International Day of Human Rights. On this day in 1948 UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – the first international document declaring the equality of human rights and freedoms.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko congratulated Ukrainians on this event. "This day reminds that every politician, statesman, public employee while fulfilling their duties charged by the society shall work first of all in the name of a human being.

During seventeen years of independence Ukraine has strengthened in the world a status of free democratic state, the citizens of which have equal rights and freedoms set out by the Constitution and the authority keep vigilant watch on their adherence. And today we all by every step, every decision, common efforts have to support this status. For the Government the adherence and protection of human rights is a top priority on which our public policy is based," Tymoshnko's statement says.

On behalf of the Government of Ukraine and she heartily congratulate free citizens of a free Fatherland and wished sound health, happiness, peace, well and prosperity.

"We should be proud of living in a free country, expressing freely our opinions, have an equal access to information and not being afraid of persecutions and discrimination because of political convictions," she said.
