At least 12 tourists, including seven foreigners, have been killed after their coach hit a delivery truck head-on along the west coast of Egypt`s Sinai peninsula, according to Sky News.

Officials say at least 37 passengers have been injured.

The accident happened outside the resort of Ras Sidr, about 35 miles south of the main road tunnel connecting Sinai with the rest of Egypt.

Ibrahim Hassan, head of emergency services for the area, said the 12 killed were seven foreign tourists and five Egyptians.

The foreigners include citizens of the Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine but no precise breakdown was given.

Each year about 6,000 people die and 30,000 are hurt in road accidents in Egypt.

A coach crash in the same region in May killed eight foreign tourists and an Egyptian driver. Three tour firms were suspended.

On Saturday, three Italian tourists were killed when the minibus they were travelling in overturned on Sinai`s eastern coast, near the resort of Dahab.
