President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko declares that there will be no contract army in Ukraine within the next few years.

The head of the state said at the press conference in Cherkassy regions.

He noted that Premier Yulia Tymoshenko promised the shift to contract army in 2009.

“I can say that there will be no contract army either in a year or in two, three or four years,” the President underlined.

Yushchenko noted that this year financing had been the lowest one ever, and that financing for the next year would be even less – 0.85% of gross domestic product. The President said that with such low level of financing it is impossible to talk about the contract army.

“It they call it to take care about Ukrainian defense policy, then it is wrong,” Yushchenko said.
