The President of Russia Dmitriy Medvedev and the President of the USA Gearge Bush presented their condolences to the family of Solzhenitsyn.
Solzhenitsyn Aleksandr Isayevich was born on December 11 1918 in Kislovodsk. Solzhenitsyn studied mathematics at Rostov State University, while at the same time taking correspondence courses from the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History (1936) and graduated from this Institute in 1941.
He took part in the Great Patriotic war and was twice decorated. In February 1945, while serving in East Prussia, he was arrested for writing a derogatory comment in a letter to a friend, N. D. Utkevich, about the conduct of the war by Joseph Stalin.He was accused of anti-Soviet propaganda and sentenced to an eight-year term in a labour camp, to be followed by permanent internal exile. He lived at Kok-Terek in southern Kazakhstan.
In 1956 Solzhenitsyn had been fully discharged according to the Resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . His literary works began to appear in press. His story One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich nominated to the Lenin Prize, but this nomination caused negative reaction of the authorities.
In 1965, the KGB had seized some of his papers. Next publishing of his books in the USSR was prohibited. In 1969 he was excluded from the Union of Writers. In 1970, Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
After having published his greatest novel Gulag Archipelago abroad, Solzhenitsyn was arrested and impeached of high treason. He was denaturalized and banished from the USSR.
During his exile Solzhenitsyn lived in Switzerland and in the USA. In 1990, his Soviet citizenship was restored, and, in 1994, he returned to Russia. He was awarded with the State Prize.
In 1997 Solzhenitsyn became a Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Russia.
