Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko is convinced that Ukraine’s accedence to NATO proves possible only in the aftermath of the national referendum. She announced on the outcomes of a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, as the Cabinet’s press service reports.
‘Ukraine’s accedence to the NATO proves possible exceptionally after an all-national referendum and no politician can approve such a crucial and strategic decision without Ukrainian people’s decision,’ Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized. At this Premier added that she would fulfill any decision made by Ukrainian citizens concerning this issue.
Yulia Tymoshenko doesn’t back an initiative of the Regions Party representatives on holding a separate referendum in terms of joining Ukraine to the NATO MAP (Membership Action Plan) and takes it as provocation.
The Head of Government reminded that Universal of National Unity, having been signed some time back by the leader of the Regions Party Viktor Yanukovych, contains that the referendum has to be held only in terms of Ukraine’s joining NATO.
However, Prime Minister stressed that a law of Ukraine “On principles of national security” approved by forces of the Regions Party faction envisages acquiring by Ukraine a full-fledged membership in all-European and regional systems of collective security, membership in the European Union and North Atlantic Alliance Organizations.”
The Government’s Head considers issues of Ukraine’s participation in NATO are extremely politicized, especially during the election campaigns. In this connection Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko presented to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer a monograph by Viktor Yanukovych titled “Strategy of economic and social development of Ukraine” where its author, being the Prime Minister then, clearly declared that he sees Ukraine’s accedence to the NATO in 2008.
According to Yulia Tymoshenko this book symbolizes that all politicians in Ukraine, without any exceptions, staying at power support the issue of Ukraine’s accedence into NATO.
