NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the alliance's delegation will visit Ukraine on June 16-17, Presidential Secretariat Deputy Head Oleksandr Chaly said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday. Cabinet's press service reports.

"The visit will be held at the invitation of the Ukrainian president to develop a decision taken at the NATO summit in Bucharest, concerning the start of intensive contacts with Ukraine at a high political level aimed at stepping up a political dialogue between Ukraine and the alliance," he said.

Chaly said that Ukraine's implementation of the NATO Membership Action Plan would be assessed during this visit. In particular, this concerns Ukraine-NATO Target Plan for 2008 in the context of the country's submitting its bid to join the MAP.

The program of the visit also foresees the holding of a Ukraine-NATO Commission meeting at the level of ambassadors, involving Ukraine's foreign and defense ministers. The delegation and secretary general of NATO are also scheduled to meet with the president, the prime minister and the parliament speaker. The groups of the alliance's delegation will visit certain Ukrainian regions.
