President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko considers that NATO has taken an obligation concerning Ukraine’s joining NATO. Yushchenko has stated at the joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the ForUm’s correspondent reports from Bucharest.

“Yesterday NATO undertook an obligation concerning Ukraine’s joining NATO,” the President said.

The President emphasizes that Ukraine has received a perspective concerning membership in the alliance.

Yushchenko considers that this decision “is right and balanced answer”.

The President emphasizes that Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state and it is able to form its own policy of safety.

And in his turn, NATO Secretary General, answering the question whether Russia can influence NATO concerning possible Ukraine’s membership in NATO, has said that NATO will not change its position concerning perspective of Ukraine to join the Alliance and nobody is able to influence this decision.
