Within the framework of his visit to Cherkasy region, in Orshavets village President Viktor Yushchenko took part in the opening of State Border Guard Service Junior Specialists Training Unit. President’s press office reports.

President took a tour of the premises of the Unit including the classes, the library, and the dining-hall. He also took part in opening of the Unit’s dormitory.

Addressing those present Viktor Yushchenko expressed assurance that the graduates of the Unit would be a foundation of the modern and professional border service. He also thanked all partner countries, which contributed to Unit’s opening and equipment. “Today’s event is an example of how common views and cooperation on international level may push ahead such a first-class national project,” President Yushchenko said.

President also emphasized that opening of the Unit is an important step towards transition of the Service to contract-based staffing as well as to development of a new international image of the Ukrainian border guardsmen as patriots, protectors and specialists. “Formation of a modern basis for international relations is one of the key tasks during organization of a modern Border Guard Service,” he said, pointing to the need for developing closer ties between national State Border Guard Service and similar bodies in other countries.

Along with President Yushchenko the participants of the event were State Border Service Chairman Mykola Lytvyn, Head of European Commission Delegation to Ukraine Ian Boag, Ambassador of the USA to Ukraine William B. Taylor and Chief of International Organization for Migration Mission in Ukraine Jeffrey Labovitz. In President’s presence Mr. Mykola Lytvyn, Mr. Ian Boag, Mr. William B. Taylor and Mr. Jeffrey Labovitz signed the Memorandum on opening of the second stage of the НUREMAS project.
