On Saturday Ukraine will remember victims of the Holodomor and political repressions. According to different data, severe famine, begun in 1932 in eastern and central regions of the country, killed 5-10 million of people for two years.
Service for the victims will be held in all regions. The main service will take place in Kyiv in Sophia square. The President with his wife, officials and other people will come to the central cathedral to honor memory of victims of the Holodomor.
The symbolic part of the event will be national action “Light a candle”. After the minute of silence at 4.p.m. people of Ukraine are called to light a candle .”At 4 p.m. light a candle in your flat or house as a sign of our respect to victims of tragedy. It will be our solidarity, awakening of our national conscience, national memory,” President said.
Events arranged for November 24:
09.00 - 10.00 – Service for killed victims will be held in Sophia cathedral;
10.00 - 11.00 – Planting of trees in viburnum grove (near Askold grave);
Up to 15.00 – Mournful motion from Sophia square to Mykhailivska square;
15.10 - 16.00 – President Viktor Yushchenko’s address;
16.00 – National minute of silence;
16.01 – National action “Light a candle”;
18.00 – Commemoration action “Requiem for victims of Holodomor” in National Opera Theatre of Ukraine.
