President Viktor Yushchenko has delivered a lecture: “Holodomor 1932-1933 – genocide of the Ukrainian nation” in local Popilnya school, president's press office reported.

V. Yushchenko dwelled broadly on history of Holodomor and its main causes including a violent process of collectivization, top-heavy norms of grain procurements and so called “dispossession of kulaks”. He also read out to students some witnesses’ testimonies, who survived Great Famine of 1932-1933.

President emphasized that nowadays we must honor all the victims of Holodomor. Therefore he urged everybody to support a nationwide action called “Light up a Candle” which shall take place on November 24 at 16.00. During that action every family willing to honor victims of Holodomor shall put a lit up candle on the window-sills of their houses.

Answering students’ questions President said that Holodomor is a tragedy not only to Ukraine but to all the world. Values common to all mankind were put under threat during the years of Great Famine. “That is why it is important that world community recognizes Holodomor as genocide against Ukrainian nation”, he said.At the end of the lecture President and students commemorated the victims of Holodomor as well as those who died in Zasyadko mine blast with moment of silence.
