President Viktor Yushchenko presented the Order of Yaroslav the Wise to Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Wednesday. He also gave his counterpart declassified documents about the activity of Ukraine’s Jewish community in the 1920s to 1940s and lists of the interned Jews killed in Ukraine’s NKVD concentration camps between 1944 and 1954, President's press office reports.
Peres thanked Yushchenko for the gesture. “It is very important for us to remember those who worked to benefit our people,” he said.
He also praised the Ukrainian President’s decision to return Torah scrolls to Ukraine’s Jewish community and commended him for fighting anti-Semitism.
