President Viktor Yushchenko on Wednesday attended a ceremony to present state awards to the nation’s top architects and artists and said in a speech “each nation tries to emphasize its individuality and wants its originality to be reflected in architecture and art," President's press office reports.

“Each nation seeks self-identification and so each nation resorts to its own language and spares no effort to develop it, to its culture, as it is one of the features of our uniqueness, the hues and sectors of our being, and to its architecture, as values and traditions are formed through volume, shape, relief and image and some part of these values and traditions become symbols and perhaps even sacred symbols,” he said.

Yushchenko said a nation that “will find in its heart high respect and high esteem for what is called pictorial art and architecture will be happy.”
