President Viktor Yushchenko on Tuesday visited the village of Bila on Zmiyiny (Snake) Island. He inspected its post office and lighthouse and viewed an archeological exhibition in the local museum, President’s press office reports.

Yushchenko presented new passports to those serving as border guards on the island and gave them a computer. He also laid flowers at the Memorial to the Fallen Sailors and Navy Officers and planted pines.

The President believes "the island’s problems are the country’s problems" and wants the government to allocate more money for developing its infrastructure, especially its sewerage and energy systems and facility to process garbage and scrap metal. He also thinks it is important to establish research and development stations on the island and ensure that its residents can travel to the continental part of the country regularly.
