President Viktor Yushchenko takes part in an informal summit of the European People’s Party in Lisbon and is expected to hold face-to-face talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, PACE President René van der Linden and European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering.

According to president's press office, Yushchenko is going to urge EU leaders to support Ukraine’s bid to become a full member of the European Union and fix its membership prospects in a new agreement on enhanced partnership between Ukraine and the EU. “Ukraine does not demand immediate membership in the EU. We believe it is necessary to develop our relations on the basis of the European Union’s openness to Ukraine as a European state. The fixation of such a principle is mutually beneficial and strategic. It will be an additional impulse for reforms and the promotion of democracy in Ukraine,” he said.
