President met with Slovak PM

President Victor Yushchenko held talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava on Friday, President's press office reports.

Two leaders spoke about visa and energy issues. Yushchenko said it was important to sign an agreement that would enable those Ukrainians and Slovaks that live close to the border to travel to Ukraine and Slovakia with no visas. (Slovakia will join the Schengen Agreement in 2008).

Yushchenko and Fico also discussed ways to develop humanitarian ties. The Ukrainian leader urged the premier to support his Common Europe: Common History initiative and said he had given his Slovak counterpart, Ivan Gasparovic, declassified files with the names of those Slovaks that died in Ukraine between 1944 and 1954 yesterday. He suggested that the two countries erect a monument to the famous Slovak writer Daniel Krman in Ukraine.

Yushchenko invited Fico to attend next year’s energy summit in Kyiv.
