Anatoly Pohribnyy, Ukraine’s prominent publicist, literary critic and pedagogue, and the Shevchenko Prize winner, has died.

President Viktor Yushchenko on Thursday sent his condolences to Pohribnyy’s relatives, friends and colleagues, describing him as a “passionate defender of the Ukrainian language and an inspired guard of the nation’s identity, whose works were a weighty contribution to the development of the national idea and culture and the assertion of the independent Ukrainian state,” President’s press office reports.

Yushchenko said his passingwas a “bitter and irretrievable” loss for his relatives, friends, writers, students and the Ukrainian culture. He added that Pohribnyy wouldnever be forgotten.
