Yesterday during a meeting with leaders of political parties-winners, President Viktor Yushchenko demanded that Ukraine’s newly elected lawmakers must repeal the Law on the Cabinet of Ministers. “I demand that this law must be abolished,” he said. He added that this controversial legislation had been passed in an unconstitutional manner, triggering this year’s political crisis.
The President insisted that he should assume control of all law enforcement bodies to avoid “excesses.” He also called on the political forces to adopt a new constitution in 2008.

“I am convinced that the year 2008 should be devoted to optimizing constitutional process and drafting a new constitution which will allow no institution or individual to usurp power and will pave the way for the development of democratic principles and values,” he said, adding that Ukrainian experts and international organizations described constitutional reforms passed in 2004 as “hasty and untimely.”

Then he urged the new parliament to reform the system of local self-government and the national judiciary.
