President Viktor Yushchenko has urged the Central Election Commission, which passed a decision yesterday to make him refrain from campaigning for his bloc, Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense, to be politically neutral, president's press office reported.

“As President, I am not beyond political process. I am responsible for preserving law and order and protecting civil freedoms,” he told reporters in Khmelnitsky on Saturday.

Yushchenko said he used each opportunity to speak to the people about how to assert and develop democracy and reiterate his belief it would be wrong to return to the past. “So I would recommend that state institutions, including the Central Election Commission, not politicize their work. This is not their competence to give such recommendations or make such assessments.”

The President also recommended the commission to learn "all the imperatives regarding the president in the constitution." “If you find a clause in it that the president of Ukraine is beyond political process, I will then want to discuss it.”
