
President Viktor Yushchenko has signed a decree to validatethe September 19, 2007 decision by the National Security and Defense Council to resolve Ukraine’s demographic crisis and develop its labor resources, President’s press office reports.
The Security Council has described the demographic situation in Ukraine as “critical” and believes it poses a threat to national security, Andriy Pyshnyy, deputy secretary of the Security Council, said at a press briefing on Wednesday. He said the country would lose half of its population by 2050 if today’s birth and mortality rates were preserved.
“This decision by the National Security and Defense Council gives direct and clear instructions to the government of Ukraine, ministries and executive offices toprepare documents aimed at correcting the course we have determined to implement the strategy of demographic development.”
Pyshnyy said the Cabinet was solely responsible for the implementation of this decision.
