President Victor Yushchenko met with Ukrainian nuclear scientists on Monday before attending a ceremony to sign contracts to build the New Safe Confinement and Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel 2, president's press office reported.

Yushchenko thanked them for their book From Shelter to Confinement of Unit 4 of CNPP [Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant] and said it confirmed Ukraine’s high scientific potential. He said their position on the need to build the NSC and SSNF 2 “has helped us to find the best possible solutions and outline a strategy to develop nuclear energy in Ukraine.”

The president said the National Energy Concept contained chapters on how to develop nuclear energy and added that Ukraine planned to construct perfectly safe nuclear reactors. He said this would make the country one of Europe’s energy leaders. “The development of the national energy market must be based on the adherence to the strictest and most up-to-date standards of reliability and safety, both at the existing and future nuclear reactors,” he said.
