President Viktor Yushchenko on Thursday met with Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and Secretary General of the Council of the European Union. They spoke about how to develop Ukraine’s ties with the European Union, President’s press office reports.

Speaking about the country’s snap parliamentary elections, Yushchenko said it was an example of how to resolve parliamentary crises through democratic means and promised to make sure the ballot is heldin a democratic and transparent manner. He added that Ukraine had invited observers representing the OSCE, BSEC, GUAM, NATO, the Council of Europe and the European Parliament to monitor thepoll.

The President saidhis country would not change its strategic course to join the European Union, as it is supported by its main political forces.

Yushchenko and Solana also discussed waysto settle the Trans-dniester conflict.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Deputy Head of the Presidential Secretariat Oleksandr Chalyy were present at the meeting.
