President Viktor Yushchenko on Saturday attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate a new school in Kyiv.

“I am convinced that this school will give knowledge to thousands of children and that today’s first-year pupils will become its history,” he said, expressing hopes such modern and wonderfullyequipped and furnished schools would soon become reality all over Ukraine, president's press office reported.

Yushchenko, who believes “Ukraine’s prosperity depends on education,” pledged to reform the educational sector and resolve problems facing Ukrainian teachers. He insisted it was important to introduce tests at schools to fight corruption and vowed to increase spending on education.

The president inspected the school’s classrooms, gym and swimming pool and signed its guestbook.
