President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko thinks that “there are no reasons to announce phosphorus-stricken region as a disaster area”. He told residents of Ozhydiv village, with whom he met at the place of disaster on Friday.

The President assured them the situation was under control and saida special commission would soon transport the poisonous substance outside Ukraine, calling it “the most responsible mission.” “We will put an end to the aftermath of this disaster in three or four days,” he said, and added that the National Security and Defense Council had decided at its session in Yalta to pay all the damages.

Yushchenko said a State commission and the Prosecutor General’s commission were working to find out what had caused Monday’s derailment and added that an independent report on the causes of the accident would soon be presented. The President insisted that the Prosecutor General and the Head of the State commission must carry out their investigations “objectively, impartially and openly,” and inform the citizens about the accident, its effects and possible aftereffects.
