Day of sorrow and victims commemoration of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 is marked on Friday in Ukraine.

The corresponding President’s decree was signed in 2000. According to that document, the Day of sorrow is marked “to commemorate publicly daughters and sons of Ukrainian people, died during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, their feat and their sacrificial acts”.

President Viktor Yushchenko, accompanied by President’s Secretariat chief Viktor Baloha, Rivne governor Viktor Matchuk and chairman of the Rivne Council Olexander Danylchuk, on Friday attended a wreath-laying ceremony in Rivne and observed one minute of silence to honor the heroes of the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War.

The President addressed the nation to honor all those who had liberated Ukraine from the Nazi invaders.

“Displaying unprecedented heroism and unity in cruel battles, bitter failures and glorious victories, Ukrainians achieved peace… in their state, which was facing its thorny path to independence. Our sacred obligation is to preserve peace and concord in our land for the sake of the Ukrainian nation's futureand in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the great victory.”
