President Victor Yushchenko on Wednesday sent a letter to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych with a request to improve transportation safety, President's press office reported.

Yushchenko said recent developments in the country’s transportation sector showed that “the safety of Ukraine’s transportation complex and citizens is lowering as well as the readiness of emergency services to prevent terrorist threats and emergencies.”

The president said the problem had resulted from insufficient state control over transportation safety, the deterioration of transportation equipment, low quality standards and poor competence of Ukraine’s transportation managers and staff.

Yushchenko said leaders of the industry were trying to justify themselves through political means, accusing others of their failures, and demanded that the premier resolve the issue.
