President Viktor Yushchenko on Wednesday, the Medical Workers Day, honored Ukrainian doctors with state awards, the President’s press office informs.

In his speech, Yushchenko thanked them for their professional commitment and said he followed developments and changes in the healthcare sector. “This is one of the most challenging sectors and it ,no doubt, needs reforms as well as colossal funds for these reforms,” he said.

The president added that the government had considerably increased spending on healthcare over the past two years, from UAH 6 bln in 2002 to UAH 17 bln in 2006, and said the cabinet of ministers had pledged to raise their salaries every quarter.

Yushchenko said it was importantto introduce new financial and managerial mechanisms in the sector, effectively develop the healthcare system, particularly first-aid facilities, promote family medicine and propagandize healthy lifestyles. The president said it was crucial to implement programs to fight cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS and TB.
