Victor Yushchenko has visited the Sumy Oblast Specialized Dispensary for the Radiological Protection of Civilians to presented medical equipment to head doctors of the region’s rural hospitals and first aid facilities, president's press office reports.

“It is a great honor for me to give such a present to my home region,” he said.

The President described first aid as an important element of the national healthcare system. He said the government spent only 8% of its medical budget to support the branch providing services for 80% of the country’s population, and called it a paradox.

“The first aid issue requires our immediate reaction,” he told the region’s authorities and business leaders, adding that all the 195 first aid facilities in the oblast, as well as other such facilities throughout Ukraine, should be re-equipped within the next couple of years.

He said the equipment for one such facility cost UAH 35,000-40,000 and added that this sum was not "very burdensome” for local budgets.

Sumy Governor Pavlo Kachur thanked the President on behalf of the local community for the equipment and expressed confidence “this aid will benefit those living in rural areas.”
