Ukraine is excluded from the list of countries with highest level of intellectual property piracy, Deputy Head of the department of the State Service for Combating Economic Crimes of the Interior Ministry Serhiy Lebid said, referring to the annual report of the International Intellectual Property Alliance, “Cabinet press office” reported.
As he noted, Ukraine started combating piracy more efficiently. "If five years ago the level of piracy reached 95%, now it is 60%," he said.
According to him, in 2006 as many as 812 crimes in copyright breaking were revealed, which was almost by 70% more than in 2005. In 2007 some 3,689 samples of audio/video products to the tune of over 6 million UAH (one USD=5.05 UAH) were withdrawn and activities of 48 underground workshops stopped.
On Wednesday in Kyiv some 70,000 counterfeit DVDs were demolished in the presence of journalists. The piracy discs were confiscated at the metropolitan Petrovka market and destroyed upon court ruling.
