Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych met with the President of International Criminal Court Philippe Kirch who stays with his first official visit to Ukraine, “Cabinet press office” informed.
The Head of the Government stressed on the significant personal contribution of Philippe Kirch into the establishing and functioning of International Criminal Court on all principal stages. The Government takes up International Criminal Court as a proficient instrument called to strengthen international justice and safety, as Viktor Yanukovych emphasized.

Prime Minister reminded that in October, 2006 Ukraine had approved the law “On joining the Agreement on privileges and immunities of International Criminal Court” which takes an effect on February 28, this year. According to Viktor Yanukovych it testifies the consistent position of our state concerning increasing of worldwide status and role of International Criminal Court.

We oversee the activity of Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, pay great attention to its work and efforts, aimed at development and including the definition “crime of aggression” to the Statute, Prime Minister announced.

During the talk Viktor Yanukovych also noted that Ukraine has been and still is an adherent of ratification of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court which takes on special significance in the light of new perspectives of development of Ukraine-EU relations. Particularly, according to him the issues of ratification of the Rome Statute and establishment of thorough cooperation with the Court are envisaged by the regulations of Ukraine-EU Action Plan for 2005-2007.

Prime Minister informed about the Government’s intentions to reform court system and law enforcement. Ukraine has to become the territory where law and justice dominate, as Viktor Yanukovych opined.

In his turn Philippe Kirch stressed that International Criminal Court is interested in broadening of cooperation with Ukraine which takes an extremely important geopolitical place in Europe. International Criminal Court President welcomed aspirations of the Government to carry out court legal reform in Ukraine and stated the readiness to provide all-round consultation support to Ukraine.
