Russia and Ukraine still have disagreements in the issue concerning delimitation in Kerch strait, Grigoriy Karasin, deputy foreign minister of Russia declared.

According to him, stumbling block of negotiations is the position of the Ukrainian side, which tries to prove that former USSR republic – Russia and Ukraine – had a certain administrative border in Kerch strait.

“The Russian side states that there were no administrative borders in area of internal sea waters,” he reminded. “There are no legal documents of Union’s level, which fix the delimitation line in waters of Azov Sea and Kerch strait,” he continued.

“In this connection, it is obvious that Russia cannot recognize the so-called ‘security line of the state border in the mentioned waters’, determined one-sidedly by the Ukrainian side in 1999,” the official underlined.

However, Karasin noted, Russia wants “to work constructively with Ukrainian partners and to find settlement of the problem.”

According to him, the Russian side considers it optimal “to create a regime of joint use of the strait with possible establishment of a belt of territorial waters along the coasts of both countries.”
