Ukraine's President Victor Yushchenko has called on the nation and Ukrainian politicians to unite to fight AIDS, president's press office reported.

“I urge each citizen of Ukraine, ministers, NGOs, business leaders, medical workers, educators and church leaders to make a consistent and daily contribution to the cause of fighting the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Ukraine,” he said.

The President said it could only be stopped if the government, NGOs and international organizations joined their efforts. He said he was personally in charge of the implementation of the program to fight HIV/AIDS in Ukraine.

World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the global AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Since then, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2005 of which, more than half a million were children.
