Victor Yushchenko has opened a center for computer calculations and a Ukrainian division of the World Data Center in Kyiv’s Polytechnic University, president's press office informs.

Following the opening ceremony, the President met with university students and winners of international student competitions, whose latest achievement is the right to represent Ukraine at a team championship in Tokyo in 2007.

Yushchenko wished them a happy Student Day and said he wanted their student years to be “the time of gaining knowledge and experience,” which will later serve them in life and benefit the whole country.

The President welcomed the opening of the centers.

“These centers are not only the means of technical and intellectual communication. They will definitely change Ukraine’s rating in the system of supreme, powerful computers. This project creates a national network that will enable dozens of Ukrainian educational establishments join in,” he said. “We are speaking about the strategy that helps us integrate into the world’s leading scientific centers and, most importantly, into Europe’s intellectual domain.”

Yushchenko added that this project was “immensely important,” for it “intellectually links us to Europe.” He said it would be our mistake “if Ukraine misses the European train.”

Education Minister Stanislav Nikolayenko and Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Viktor Bondar attended the ceremony.
